Chapter 5

EVALUATION

Jason at Summit ER at the bottom of Copper Mountain, Colorado, on January 29, 2023.

"They would need to transfer me to a gurney, which would hurt. They would need to roll me, which would hurt. They would proceed with a trauma evaluation, a head-to-toe protocol in the ER. They would tell me to wiggle my toes and move my legs, then they would ask if I can feel this or that. I have done this trauma protocol, probably hundreds of times. Now they would do it to me."

"And then I felt all of their hands at once. They gave me all the dignity they could. They were efficient, respectful, and professional, even as my yelling pierced the room. It’s the most medically sound way to move an injured patient, but there’s no way to put words to the pain."
