Chapter 19

LAMENT

At Craig Rehab, Jason learned tasks like how to continue to cook in the kitchen.

"Craig Hospital has incredible resources to train spinal cord injury patients how to function independently. They have a kitchen adapted to wheelchair level, and part of my therapy was to roll several blocks to the local grocery store, buy ingredients, and then make dinner—with supervision, but not help."

Jason during physical therapy.

"For those first few weeks, I cried every day. Sometimes I cried for a few minutes, and sometimes I wept bitterly for a long time. I had much to mourn: the loss of the use of my legs, the loss of my career, the loss of control. We do not grieve as those who have no hope, but still we grieve. And the grief was real."
