Chapter 13

FORGIVENESS

Eric, Jason, and Caryl Kolb in Colorado after the court hearing in which Jason testified after Eric's assault.

"This is the way we humans have settled disputes and dispensed justice for millennia. It’s primal, satisfying, and seemingly fair: an eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth. But as a follower of Christ, I am called to a different way of life."

Caryl, Eric, and Jason in court in Colorado.

"Forgiveness is almost always very, very painful. From where can we draw the strength for such a heavy task? There is only one way: to do what is “out of the cross,” we must turn to the strength of the cross."

Amy and Jason at Les Mis in Cleveland, fall 2024.

"And then, Val Jean summarizes his prior worldview: Take an eye for an eye / Turn my heart into stone / This is all I have lived for / This is all I have ever known. Truly, this is all we have ever known too. Until we see someone forgive. Until we receive forgiveness ourselves."
